What this ranking is (and isn't)

These lists rank states by raw facility count and the count of facilities reporting each service (MAT, telehealth, Medicaid, detox, sliding-fee or payment assistance) in the SAMHSA N-SUMHSS survey. "Payment assistance" means a sliding-fee scale or assistance program is offered, not that treatment is free of charge. They are not a quality, safety, or outcomes score, SAMHSA does not collect clinical-outcome or accreditation data, so no such score exists here. A state ranking high simply has more listed facilities or more facilities reporting a service, not necessarily better care. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey, field-collected March through December 2024, 17,974 treatment facilities nationwide report the service, payment, and population data these rankings are built from.
