Key Findings

  • 47.2% of SAMHSA-listed treatment facilities nationwide report offering Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), leaving more than half of the 17,974-facility dataset without this FDA-recommended, evidence-based option on site.
  • Only 12.7% of facilities offer detoxification services, the most resource-intensive and least available care type SAMHSA tracks.
  • West Virginia has the highest MAT availability among states with 50+ facilities, at 66.5% of its 167 facilities.
  • Hawaii has the lowest MAT availability among states with 50+ facilities, at just 15.9%, a 4.2x gap versus West Virginia.
  • 83.7% of facilities accept Medicaid, but that still leaves 2,929 facilities nationwide with no Medicaid acceptance on file.
  • 81.2% of facilities report offering telehealth, reflecting the broad shift toward remote behavioral-health access.
  • 50.4% of facilities are operated by a private non-profit organization, the single largest ownership category in the dataset.
